Do you drive for work?

Say yes if you regularly use your own vehicle for work-related travel — driving between sites, out to clients, to temporary workplaces or to appointments. Ordinary commuting to one permanent workplace does not count.

Paid nothing for mileage

You can claim relief on the full HMRC approved amount for every business mile you drove.

Paid under 45p a mile

You can still claim. The relief is worth your rate of tax on the gap between what you were paid and the approved rate.

Changed jobs or left

Past years still count. We check each of the last four tax years separately, whoever you worked for at the time.

Frequently asked questions

Who can claim a mileage tax rebate from HMRC?

If you’re employed and use your own vehicle for work travel, and your employer pays less than 45p per mile, you may be eligible for a tax rebate. This includes workers in construction, healthcare, delivery, field sales and more.

How much can I claim back for mileage tax relief?

Relief is worth your rate of tax on the difference between the HMRC approved rates — 45p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in a tax year, 25p after that — and whatever your employer actually reimbursed. The average rebate value is £3,000. Our mileage calculator gives you an estimate for your own figures.

Can I still claim if my employer pays mileage?

Yes, as long as they pay you less than the approved rate. You claim tax relief on the shortfall, not on the whole amount. If your employer already pays 45p a mile or more, there is nothing left to claim.

What do I need to claim a mileage rebate?

Your National Insurance number, who you worked for and a reasonable estimate of your business miles. No logbooks or receipts are required to get started — rotas, job sheets and payslips are usually enough to support the claim.

Can I claim for previous tax years?

Yes. Claims can normally be backdated four tax years, and we check each year separately before we file anything with HMRC.
