Can I Claim a Mileage Tax Rebate If I Changed Employers During the Tax Year?
Switched jobs mid year? You can still claim a mileage tax rebate from HMRC even if you worked for multiple employers in a single tax year. Many PAYE workers miss out because they assume job changes affect their eligibility.
Can I still claim if I had two employers?
Yes. If you:
Were employed under PAYE
Used your own vehicle for business travel
Weren’t fully reimbursed for mileage
Then you can claim for each job you held even if you only worked for a few months in each.
How does it work?
You’ll calculate your eligible mileage separately for each role. HMRC allows 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles, regardless of how many employers you had.
Example:
Job A: 2,000 business miles, no reimbursement
Job B: 1,500 miles, reimbursed at 20p
Total rebate = over £300 depending on your tax rate
What journeys count?
You can claim mileage for:
Temporary work sites
Client visits
Off site training or events
You can’t claim for regular commuting.
What if I don’t have records from my old job?
No problem. TaxBax helps estimate mileage based on job title, travel patterns and dates of employment even if you didn’t track everything.
Claim your mileage even after switching jobs
Changing jobs doesn’t mean you miss out. You can still claim mileage tax relief for all eligible roles in the same year and for up to four years back.
