Can Casual Workers Claim Mileage Tax Relief?
If you're a casual or zero-hours worker and use your own vehicle for work, you might still be entitled to claim a mileage tax rebate from HMRC. Many flexible workers wrongly assume they don’t qualify, but that’s not always true.
Who counts as a casual worker?
Casual workers often:
Have no fixed hours or shifts
Are paid only when they work
May work for different employers throughout the year
If you’re taxed through PAYE and use your own car or van for work travel, you could be eligible for mileage tax relief.
What journeys are eligible?
You can claim for:
Temporary work sites
Off-site jobs
Travel between locations on the same shift
You can’t claim for standard commuting to a permanent workplace.
What if my hours vary each week?
That’s fine. You don’t need a set schedule to claim. As long as you meet HMRC’s basic mileage rules, your claim is valid, even if you only worked occasionally.
Example:
You drive 1,000 miles in a year
Employer pays nothing per mile
HMRC allows 45p per mile = £450 mileage
Estimated rebate = £90–£180 depending on tax rate
What if I didn’t track my mileage?
TaxBax can help estimate your travel using your job type, shift pattern and work locations. You don’t need receipts or a logbook.
